We all love animals, but in Russian, some animal names have negative connotations when used to describe people. These animal metaphors are often used to express certain personality traits, but they can also be insulting. Here are some examples:
Deer (олень) – Not only is this a noble animal, it is also used to describe someone who has been betrayed in a relationship, especially when someone is “cuckolded”, a metaphor that emphasizes the infidelity of the partner.
Ram (баран) – a stubborn and not very smart person who sticks to his own goals without considering the consequences and does not listen to other people’s advice.
Stupid hen (тупая курица) – This is a crude way of saying a woman that implies she lacks the ability to think logically or make wise decisions.
Seagull (чайка) – In modern usage, this word refers to a girl who likes to sit in a restaurant and let others pay for her meals, usually without any interest in the person who pays for her. It can also be used to describe someone who is always trying to gain benefits from others.
Goat (козёл) – This metaphor is used to describe someone who behaves in a mean, immoral way or who betrays trust.
Rooster (петух) – This is the most insulting Russian word in prison culture. In criminal circles, “петух” describes someone who is at the bottom of the social ladder, humiliated and mocked. In everyday life, this word is also extremely offensive, so its use should be avoided.
